Crackdown on Freedom: Human Rights Violations Amid Georgia's Protests for EU Integration (November-December 2024)
12 December, 2024
These documents, prepared by Georgia’s European Orbit, chaired by former Public Defender Nino Lomjaria, provide a detailed account of human rights violations during protests in Georgia between November 28 and December 9, 2024. The reports are based on publicly available sources, information collected by a Network of 11 NGOs, including Transparency International Georgia, and official data published by government agencies. Key findings include:
- Violent Crackdowns: Excessive force and illegal actions by police and informal groups against peaceful protesters, journalists, and activists, including torture, ill-treatment, and targeted violence.
- Suppression of Journalists: Documented cases of journalists being attacked or detained while covering the protests, often in the presence of law enforcement.
- Searches and Seizures: Reports of unlawful home and office raids targeting activists, political groups, and protest leaders.
- Impunity and Repression: Lack of accountability for perpetrators within law enforcement and informal groups, alongside judicial failures to uphold justice.
- Escalating Tactics: Use of informal, masked groups (“Titushki”) to intimidate and attack civilians and protesters, further complicating accountability.
