Non-governmental organizations request meeting with the chief prosecutor of Georgia with regard to Afgan Mukhtarli’s case
On January 12, 2018, the Belakani (Azerbaijan) District court found Afgan Mukhtarli guilty in the imposed charges and sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment. The court did not satisfy any solicitations of the defense side, which aimed to confirm innocence of Mukhtarli.
We would like to respond to the events that unfolded around the incident which took place outside the Bassiani club and say that this case raises certain questions with regard to the work of the court. The events have once again demonstrated that the system of justice is facing serious challenges in terms of its impartiality and independence.

The Parliament of Georgia is conducting the first hearing on the legislative package of amendments to the Law on Common Courts, and the Civil and Administrative Procedural Codes, which together make up the “Fourth Wave” of judicial reforms.
